SAN DIEGO – New research suggests consumers are keen to shop for more ‘sustainable’ fashion, but almost half aren’t sure where to find it or what constitutes a sustainable garment.

The survey of 2,000 US teens and adults highlights that almost three-quarters are well aware of the environmental issues that implicate fashion industry stakeholders, such as carbon emissions and water pollution, though many still aren’t aware of what factors might influence a product’s credentials.

Christophe Schilling, CEO of manufacturing company Genomatica, which conducted the research, said: “There’s a significant opportunity for fashion and apparel brands to show real leadership and make a substantive impact by providing consumers with the clear information they desire on the sourcing and environmental impact of their products.”
