WILMINGTON - Chemical giant DuPont, and two spin-off companies, have agreed to pay at least US$50 million to help clean up environmental damage caused by releases of historical compounds including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS.

The Delaware Department of Justice confirmed the landmark settlement which will pay for environmental restoration, improvement, sampling and analysis; community environmental justice and equity grants; and other natural resource needs.

It relates to damage caused by releases of historical compounds including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), used in the production of water-repellent clothing, as well as non-stick cooking pans and firefighting foam.
