AFRICA - Leading fashion brands are helping to drive pollution that has made African rivers as alkaline as bleach, according to a new report from the Water Witness International (WWI) initiative.

The NGO says the list of those sourcing from Africa is a "who’s who of high street names and brands" including Adidas, ASOS, Calvin Klein, GAP, H&M, Hugo Boss, Levi’s, Marks and Spencer, Next, Primark, Puma, Reebok, Ralph Lauren, Tesco, Tommy Hilfiger, Walmart and Zara.

Without singling out any particular brand for blame, it says garment manufacturing in Africa is linked to water pollution and exacerbating climate change in countries such as South Africa, Lesotho, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia.
