COLOMBO - Trade union leaders in Sri Lanka are calling on the government to reverse a decision to exempt garment factories from a lockdown to tackle a spike in the highly contagious Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus.

The Free Trade Zones and General Services Employees Union (FTZ & GSEU) has written to both the country's President, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, and its Director General of Health Services, Asela Gunawardena.

FTZ & GSEU joint secretary Anton Marcus said that allowing the apparel industry, and other 'vital' export sectors to remain open during the 10-day lockdown would affect the lives of millions of workers.
