RHODE ISLAND - PFAS compounds which are thought to break off treated products, including clothing and carpets, are contaminating the air inside buildings, according to a new study.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) - dubbed ‘forever chemicals’ because of their longevity in the environment - are widely used in the textile industry for their water, stain and oil-repellent properties.

Humans were mainly thought to be exposed to the chemicals, which have been linked to serious health problems, through food and water but the new study points to the additional risk of inhalation.
