PORTLAND – US footwear brand Keen has expanded its Detox the Planet initiative with the debut of its Harvest Certified programme, which will look to mitigate industrial waste by upcycling materials for future use.

The Harvest Certified programme establishes a tier system, through which products made from upcycled material will be awarded a gold, silver or bronze rating depending on the amount of repurposed material is utilised.

“Harvest is about upcycling industrial waste that would otherwise go to landfills, instead creating something new and useful, while lowering the demand for new material in the production process,” said Erik Burbank, Keen’s vice president. “We’re certifying Harvest products to both provide transparency to fans and to demystify and encourage other brands to help attack the industrial waste problem.”
