MUMBAI – Indian textile manufacturer Welspun has vowed to support cotton farmers in its supply chain with access to finance and sustainable business training, as part of its WelKrishi programme.

The company, which says the programme underpins its commitment to environmental and social governance, is targeting cotton production because of the vast quantities of water required to produce the material.

Dipali Goenka, the CEO of Welspun India, said: “Sustainable cotton farming is the key to unlocking a radical transformation across the textile value chain in the interest of environmental conservation while lifting millions of people out of poverty by providing a more stable income and improved working conditions.”
