PHNOM PENH - The Ethical Trading Inititative (ETI) is calling on garment factory owners in Cambodia to regard the new minimum wage settlement as a "floor not a ceiling".

The ETI says the new figure of US$194 per month, agreed following tripartite talks between employers, unions and the government, is not enough to meet garment workers' basic needs.

"Minimum wages are a floor, not a ceiling," it said in a statement. "ETI would expect responsible brands to work with their suppliers and local unions to establish a clear plan to progress all wages towards a living wage.
