The subject of sustainability in textiles has been around for the last couple of decades and, whilst there have been a few common threads, there is a tendency for priorities to change and for certain topics to be ‘flavour of the month’.

Typically, in the world of fashion, environmental issues become popular either when something marketable arises and people jump on the eco-bandwagon or when there is a reaction to the latest scare, which could be based on sound evidence, hearsay or, whisper it quietly, a desire to tarnish a product or process to make money from alternative products or processes.

Additionally, if issues become enshrined in law in any sensible jurisdiction, they are not likely to go away and will remain part of the regulatory landscape.
