WASHINGTON DC - Zara owner Inditex, outdoor clothing brand Patagonia and sportswear company Brooks Running are among nine major companies pledging to move cargo on ships using zero-carbon fuel by 2040.

The new Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels (coZEV) coalition also includes online retail giant Amazon and Swedish-owned retailer IKEA, as well as Frog Bikes, Michelin, Tchibo and Unilever.

The Aspen Institute global nonprofit is behind the project which aims to rapidly accelerate the decarbonisation of maritime shipping which it says produces a billion tons of climate pollution each year, accounting for three per cent of global emissions.
