BRUSSELS - Two organisations representing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have presented their recommendations for what they hope to see in the European Union's (EU) new sustainable textile strategy.

Both the SMEunited and the Small Business Standards (SBS) bodies said sustainable product design, support for circular models, setting up recycling infrastructures and developing European standards were key to more sustainable textiles.

The European textile sector is predominantly made up of SMEs, among which 89 per cent are micro enterprises - those with less than 10 employees, ranging from manufacturing to repair, rental, laundry and cleaning services.
