WASHINGTON DC — US president Joe Biden will sign off the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act which would ban all imports made with forced labour in the Xinjiang region of China, the White House has confirmed for the first time.

The legislation would have significant implications for the fashion and textiles industry with the region - where around 1.8 million Uyghur Muslims have been incarcerated - supplying around a fifth of the world's cotton.

The White House's announcement came before the House of Representatives approved the proposed law which now heads to the Senate where it is expected to be sent on to the White House for the president's signature.
