DHAKA – New research from an international team of academics suggests that female garment workers in Bangladesh were disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 disruptions.

Both male and female workers, factory bosses and trade unions were interviewed between November 2020 and July 2021 as part of the study, with women citing an increase in gender violence, abuse and economic hardship as a result of cancelled orders and discounted prices.

The researchers, from the University of Aberdeen, Dhaka University and Traidcraft Exchange UK, have outlined a number of policy recommendations both for authorities in Bangladesh and the UK to consider if they’re to snuff out future malpractice.
