DHAKA – The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with German development agency GIZ and consultancy firm Particip, reinforcing efforts to improve working conditions across the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector.

The agreement comes off the back of a partnership the BGMEA forged with the International Labour Organization (ILO) last month, which similarly set out to establish factory committees comprising workers and management.

The association’s president Faruque Hassan commented: “The RMG industry of Bangladesh has made unprecedented efforts and progress in workplace safety, particularly in fire, electrical and structural integrity over the past eight years. I hope this initiative will strengthen the capacity of workers and management representatives to make different committees more functional.”
