BANGKOK – A Thai trade union leader has accused the country’s authorities of using COVID-19 restrictions to keep workers in line after 1,388 former garment workers won a ‘historic’ victory to end a 13-month dispute.

Owners of the Brilliant Alliance Thai Global (BAT) factory finally agreed to pay US$8.3 million owed to the workers in May after lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret arranged the finance for its former supplier.

The Solidarity Center and the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) hailed the pay-out as “historic” but union leaders involved in the campaign believe they are being targeted for retaliatory prosecutions by the authorities.
