STOCKHOLM - A new report on the current scale of the European textile recycling industry has identified a shortage of sorters able to separate textile waste for recycling.
The study, entitled 'Sustainable Clothing Futures', from the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, said there were currently 12 sorters and 33 recyclers operating in Europe.
Sorters were only able to process 560,000 tonnes annually, less than half of the 1.3 million ton capacity of textile recyclers and only 22-35 per cent of the total textile waste collected.
