BRUSSELS - The European Commission has rejected calls from the drinks industry to reserve collected PET bottles for recycling back into new bottles, rather than other products such as polyester.

The soft drinks industry argues that collected PET bottles should be used to make new bottles, which can be recycled again, rather than polyester as textile-to-textile recycling is still limited.

However, European regulators say they cannot give priority access to recycled PET to the beverage industry as this would cause a “distortion in the market”.
