AMSTERDAM – Materials science brand Pangaia and Dutch renewable chemistry company Avantium are teaming up on the development of a sustainable apparel collection based on the latter’s 100% plant-based polymer, polyethylene furanoate (PEF).
The main building block for PEF, which has been referred to as the next generation polyester, is FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid). The first commercial facility for its production is currently under construction in Delfzijl in the Netherlands with large-scale production set to start in the second half of 2024.
