STOCKHOLM –The Scandinavian Textile Initiative for Climate Action (STICA) next week hosts its Climate Action Week for Fashion and Apparel to highlight the “daunting” challenges facing the industry in meeting its carbon targets.

Experts from across the industry will discuss a range of climate-related issues during a week of webinars that will highlight the challenges and potential solutions for the apparel industry from 18th–22nd March.

Over 40 speakers will contribute to 13 seminars throughout the week. They include 2B policy co-founder and director Baptiste Carriere-Pradal; Kim Hellström, climate programme manager at H&M; Pascale Moreau, founder of Ohana Public Affairs; Kalpona Akter from Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity; and ECOS programme manager Luca Boniolo.

The event begins on Monday 18th March with two webinars – ‘What Gets Measured Gets Managed: But Are We Measuring the Right Things And Are We Measuring Them Right?’ and ‘Fibre Production & GHG Emission Reductions: How Important Is What Is Made VS. How It Is Made? Are Natural Fibres and Synthetics Equally Problematic?’

Tuesday will see three webinars. The first discusses the feasibility of climate goals, before ‘Show Me The Money – For Financing the Transition’ and ‘Voluntary Industry Organisations & Climate Initiatives: How Effective Are They & What More Can They Do?’.

The third day will host the session ‘Is the Current Climate Strategy, as Currently Defined By Brands, Doomed to Fail? A Select Group of Manufacturers Weigh In’. Two more sessions will then address legislative proposals to mitigate the climate crisis in the European Union and the US.

Three webinars are scheduled for Thursday: ‘Climate Action Means Transition – But How Do We Ensure This Transition is Just?’; ‘Circular Business Models Are Critical for Climate Action – So What Is Preventing Them From Becoming Mainstream?’; and a session on climate action watchdogs.

Friday sees two final sessions. One entitled ‘Green-growth, Overconsumption & Degrowth: Can Sufficient Emissions Reductions Be Achieved within the Current Paradigm?’ before ‘A Conversation with Ken Pucker’ concludes the week.

The Sustainable Fashion Academy, which coordinates STICA, provides full details and registration links on its website. A statement also highlights the ‘daunting’ task facing the industry in meeting its climate targets.

“Our progress is too slow and the challenges ahead are many. But we must stay the course,” it says. “We will identify what we should keep doing, what we should stop doing and what more we can still do.”
