Better Cotton targets reduced pesticide exposure

KARACHI – Farmers in Pakistan growing their cotton under the guidance of the Better Cotton initiative experienced a reduced level of exposure to harmful pesticides, new research suggests.

The year-long study, which was carried out during the 2020/21 cotton season across three districts of Punjab – Toba Tek Singh, Bahawalnagar and Layyah, showed that 47% of the pesticide applicators working on Better Cotton licensed farms were not adversely affected by the pesticides compared to 22% of those on conventional cotton-producing farms.
