BASEL – Textile chemistry specialist Beyond Surface Technologies has partnered with UK biotech firm Remora to bring the latter’s biofilm prevention technology to the global textile market.
Switzerland-based Beyond Surface Technologies supplies a range of textile finishes made from bio-based materials such as plant seeds, natural waxes and microalgae.
By combining these products with Remora’s patented, biofilm-prevention technology, a scientifically engineered molecule inspired by red seaweed’s natural defence mechanisms, the two partners say they are accelerating the development of non-toxic, eco-friendly finishes to protect against potentially hazardous biofilms on sportswear, workwear, home and high-performance technical fabrics.
Yvonne Davies, chief commercial officer at Remora, which originally developed the technology through a decade-long R&D collaboration with Unilever and leading UK universities, explained: “This partnership with BST is a transformational step for Remora and a breakthrough moment for the textile industry.
“Our Remora technology offers a sustainable, scientifically proven alternative to toxic biocidal treatments and will help brands tackle persistent odour, staining and material degradation caused by biofilms.

Biofilms are said to be global issue, responsible for over 80% of bacterial infections and costing the economy more than $4 trillion annually. In textiles, they are known to compromise hygiene, comfort and product quality.
