California firm will stop growing mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi that it uses to make leather alternatives and shift its business model to sourcing the product
UNION – The biomaterials technology company MycoWorks, which engineers funghi at a cellular level to produce a material that mimics premium animal leather, will close its production facility in South Carolina as it moves away from growing mycelium to focus on sourcing and tanning the natural raw material.
In an open letter fromo CEO Matt Scullin, which addressed MycoWorks’ partners and stakeholders, as well as the wider mycelium materials industry, Scullin wrote: “Today marks a pivotal moment for MycoWorks and the future of the mycelium materials industry."
