Consortium aims to scale production of 100% renewable and circular polyester to accelerate shift from fossil-based plastics

AMSTERDAM - Renewable chemistry specialist Avantium has linked up with luxury fashion company LVMH and agricultural cooperative Tereos to scale production of its Releaf-branded PEF, a bio-based alternative to traditional PET polyester.

The consortium aims to build Europe’s first industrial-scale facility converting crops like sugar beet, wheat and corn into FDCA and PEF (polyethylene furanoate), the building blocks for next-generation materials including textile fibres.
