Japanese scientists say they have created a chemical process which produces high quality recycled PET with minimal energy and resource input

TOKYO - scientists at Tokyo Metropolitan University claim to have developed an innovative chemical recycling technique for PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles and textile waste.

The new process, detailed in the ACS Sustainable Resource Management peer-reviewed journal, achieves exclusive depolymerisation of PET waste using a combination of alcohols and an inexpensive, earth-abundant iron catalyst.
