Apparel Impact Institute webinar will detail apparel and footwear sector benchmark for energy and carbon performance. Sign up to watch below.

Across the apparel and footwear sector, more than 600 companies have approved or committed to science-based targets. That momentum clearly signals the industry is ready for ambitious climate action backed by credible, independent data.

As brands and manufacturers look for consistent guidance on what “good” energy and GHG emissions performance means, a shared benchmark has the potential to unlock faster, more aligned progress.

To tackle this, Apparel Impact Institute (Aii) has embarked on an open, collaborative process to shape that benchmark. Developed alongside technical experts, manufacturers, and brands, the ‘Energy and Carbon Benchmark’ offers a new level of clarity by focusing on process-level energy and emissions performance. This structure enables fair, transparent comparisons across facilities and regions while helping suppliers and brands see exactly where efficiency gains are possible.

Aii recently released the proposed methodology for public consultation, and is inviting stakeholders from across the value chain to review the draft, test the logic, and help strengthen the final version before its full release in early 2026.

The consultation period is open through December 12.

Participants can share feedback with Aii by completing a short survey or by emailing the team: [email protected].

The organisation says it also welcomes expressions of interest from those who wish to join the review committee supporting ongoing methodological updates. In this role, Aii is particularly interested in those with expertise in energy systems, emissions estimation, methodology development, or benchmark creation to ensure the review process is robust and well-informed.

To support the consultation, Aii is therefore hosting an informational webinar, offered in two sessions to ensure global participation, that will walk through the methodology and provide time for questions and discussion. Presenters will share examples that illustrate why process-level insight matters, how the tool accounts for differences across facilities, and what it means to be above, at, or below the benchmark.

Attendees will see how different production mixes, fuel choices, and process configurations influence results, and how the tool distinguishes between energy efficiency and emissions outcomes.

For suppliers and brands alike, these sessions will offer a practical look at how the benchmark supports more focused, evidence-based collaboration across sourcing regions.

Those interested in attending can register using the following links.

This consultation is a critical step toward establishing a shared reference for energy and emissions performance – one that supports continuous improvement, accelerates decarbonisation, and reduces ambiguity across the industry.

Aii encourages stakeholders to participate, share the consultation with their networks, and help shape a tool designed to best serve the entire sector.
