New study finds workers in Indian garment factories are routinely denied even basic protections against the growing threat of heat stress
MUMBAI - Extreme heat on India’s garment factory floors is pushing workers’ bodies and the industry itself to “breaking point”, a new study by the HeatWatch non-profit and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has warned.
Drawing on surveys with 115 garment workers in Tamil Nadu and Delhi-NCR, 47 in-depth interviews, focus group discussions with home-based women workers, and case studies from 15 factories in Tamil Nadu, Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, the report finds that workers are routinely denied even basic protections against heat stress.
