Swiss plasma coating project aims to deliver PFAS-free, water-repellent yarns for outdoor textiles while cutting chemical use

ST GALLEN — Swiss researchers at Empa are working with textile manufacturers on a plasma-based coating technology designed to replace per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water-repellent outdoor clothing.

The Innosuisse-funded EC0Tex project aims to use fluorine-free substances to produce durable, water-repellent coatings for yarns while reducing chemical consumption and meeting 'safe and sustainable by design' (SSbD) criteria.
