The recyclable protein-based textile fibre can be dissolved and remade multiple times, offering a potential closed-loop alternative to petrochemical materials that shed persistent microplastics
MISSOURI – Researchers claim to have found a solution to recycling petrochemical-based fibres in textiles – which shed persistent microplastics – with protein-based materials.
It’s claimed the materials can be readily recycled after use and remade into the same fibres over multiple cycles. The microparticles released from these fibres during washing are said to be biodegradable under certain conditions.
