An under the radar prosecution in Vietnam is about to focus attention on whether fashion’s sustainability data can be trusted – and what that means for the legal accountability of those relying on it.
Vietnam’s recent prosecution of 74 individuals over the alleged manipulation of environmental monitoring data was, at first glance, a story about heavy industry and state oversight. Most working across apparel and textile sustainability systems will have missed it entirely. They should look again.
That's because where third-party data systems inform procurement or compliance decisions, the legal accountability does not transfer with the data. This makes the governance implications of how companies handle environmental data impossible to ignore at board level.
