US textiles group urges Patagonia to turn its legal dispute with a drag activist into a campaign for intellectual property reform

WASHINGTON DC — A US circular economy coalition has published an open letter to Patagonia, calling on the outdoor apparel brand to use its high-profile trademark dispute with environmental drag activist Pattie Gonia to push for reform of US intellectual property law.

American Circular Textiles (AMCIRC), whose members span retail, resale, recycling, repair and manufacturing, argues the dispute exposes structural flaws in US trademark law which, it says, directly impede the growth of circular business models including resale, upcycling and repair.
