Former US agriculture secretary Mike Johanns joins agtech start-up Avalo to support AI-bred, low-carbon cotton

DURHAM — Former US Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns has joined crop-innovation company Avalo as a strategic adviser, as it prepares to scale low-input cotton for climate-stressed supply chains.

Avalo, based in Durham, North Carolina, uses an AI-powered “Rapid Evolution Platform” to develop crops that need less water and fertiliser while maintaining yield, positioning them as tools to cut fashion brands’ scope 3 emissions and farm-level costs.
