Project aims to scale a continuous process for producing bio‑based aniline to cut the carbon footprint of polyurethane foams
LEVERKUSEN – Covestro has launched an EU‑funded project to develop what it claims is the world’s first continuous production process for bio‑based aniline, a key precursor for methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) used in polyurethane foams.
The company is already investing around €300 million in new aniline capacity at its Antwerp site to underpin MDI growth in Europe, and sees bio‑based routes as a way to “defossilise” part of this value chain over the longer term.
