Too many of the fashion industry’s climate targets were structured in ways that made them easier to issue than to enforce.

YORK – When a business needs to free up cash, capital and managerial attention, it does not default on the obligations that bite back. It defaults on the ones least able to bite back. The climate target is not being abandoned because brands are uniquely cynical about the climate.

It is being abandoned because, of everything they have promised, it is one of the few major promises where the most affected parties are not formally on the other side of the table.
