EU textile rules skew toward synthetics

BRUSSELS – The Make the Label Count coalition has urged the European Commission to ensure sustainably sourced materials (SSRMs) are properly included in the EU’s textile ecodesign work, warning that the current approach could hand synthetic fibres an advantage.

In a letter to environment commissioner Jessika Roswall and director general for environment Eric Mamer, the coalition backed a call from 15 MEPs for sustainably sourced renewable materials to be included in the Joint Research Centre’s preparatory study for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) delegated act.
