EU EmpCo rules and Germany’s new anti‑greenwashing law risk turning unsold stock into waste, forcing fashion and textile brands to strip back sustainability claims or face legal action

From September 2026, generic green marketing terms such as “eco friendly” or “climate neutral”, and non certified sustainability labels, will be unlawful.

BERLIN – Germany’s leading retail body has warned that EU consumer rules on environmental claims could force companies to destroy millions of euros’ worth of products and packaging from September 2026, with implications far beyond its domestic market.

For global fashion brands sourcing into Germany, that means existing stock that carries vague environmental language or in‑house labels could suddenly become non‑compliant.
