Michelin and Axens set to team up to scale a bio-based platform for green chemistry that could open new routes to polyester alternatives
PÉAGE-DE-ROUSSILLON — Michelin has entered exclusive talks with French technology company Axens to scale production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a bio-based chemical seen as a potential building block for more sustainable polyester-type textiles.
Under the proposed partnership, Michelin’s ResiCare subsidiary would operate a new unit at its existing industrial site in Péage-de-Roussillon, France, with Axens licensing and engineering the process at commercial scale. The plant is designed to produce 3,000 tonnes per year of industrial-grade 5-HMF from sugar-based feedstocks, with start-up targeted for early 2027.
