Cotton trade growth rests on fragile stocks

Global cotton trade is forecast to grow to 10.3 million tonnes by 2028/29, but ICAC warns tighter production, vulnerable supplies and shifting demand are reshaping risks

WASHINGTON DC — Global cotton trade is expected to expand over the medium term even as production falls and consumption remains robust, according to the latest International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) World Cotton Trade Report.

Trade in the 2025/26 season is estimated at 9.4 million tonnes, up 2% on the previous season, and projected to reach 10.3 million tonnes by 2028/29.
