Researchers form continuous mycelium sheets using liquid fermentation and paper-style rollers, but commercial viability still unproven
ESPOO — Researchers at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland have demonstrated a liquid-fermentation route for producing continuous sheets of mycelium-based nonwoven material, targeting a longstanding scale-up challenge for fungal leather alternatives.
Published in ACS Applied Bio Materials, the study describes growing Trichoderma reesei fungal biomass in nutrient-rich tanks rather than allowing mycelium to form sheets on trays.
