Uzbek Forum says coercive quotas and delayed cocoon payments are shifting sericulture risks on to rural producers
TASHKENT — Farmers and home-based cocoon producers in Uzbekistan have alleged that coercive contracting, falsified production records and delayed payments are undermining labour rights in the country’s expanding silk industry.
The allegations are detailed in a new report by Uzbek Forum for Human Rights which claims some farmers were pressed to sign blank or incomplete contracts with district silk clusters, without being allowed to read the terms or retain copies.
