Research: bacteria break down toxic dye

Indian researchers isolate a novel bacterium that degrades almost all of a stubborn synthetic textile dye and detoxifies the by-products

GUWAHATI — Scientists at IIT Guwahati and IIT (BHU) Varanasi say they have identified a bacterium that breaks down a hard-to-treat textile dye and renders its residues non-toxic.

The team isolated a novel strain, Brevundimonas sp. AJZ05, from a textile effluent discharge site. Under optimised conditions it degraded 98.50% of Direct Blue-6, a widely used synthetic azo dye.
