ST LOUIS – Scientists claim they have made a significant breakthrough in the production of synthetic spider silk which could lead to its use in textiles at scale.

A team at the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St Louis worked out how to use bacteria to engineer spider silk in the lab back in 2018.

However, they say they have now succeeded in significantly increasing the yield and strength of the silk threads while maintaining their lightness and flexibility.
