China rewrites environmental rulebook for textiles

China’s new wastewater standard is only one part of a broader shift spanning environmental law, chemicals, carbon, monitoring and standards

BEIJING - When we reported on China’s new textile wastewater standard - GB 4287-2026 – last month, the story centred on one mandatory rule with a hard implementation date and clear implications for dyeing and finishing. But following the standard’s own legal trail – it explicitly says it was formulated to implement China’s new Ecological Environment Code – it has now led to something much larger than wastewater.

In little over six months this year, China has brought the 1,242-article Code into force, launched a textile standards programme targeting 300-plus new or revised national standards by 2028, advanced chemicals, carbon and traceability frameworks, and introduced revised environmental accountability rules.
