The global trade in used clothing is increasingly contentious – are wealthy countries extending the life of garments, or exporting waste to the Global South?
ACCRA – Environmental campaigners and secondhand clothing dealers in Ghana have long been at odds over the impacts and benefits of used clothing exports from the Global North to African countries such as Ghana.
In an attempt to gain some perspective, we invited the Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association, which represents wholesalers at Ghana’s vast Kantamanto market, and a retailer, who buys bales of clothing to sell on the market, to give their sides of the story.
