COPENHAGEN – In an ongoing live webinar hosted by the Global Fashion Agenda, Virginijus Sinkevičius, the EU Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to deliver on flagship initiatives, such as the European Green Deal, which includes the new strategy for textiles.

His comments come after the coronavirus outbreak forced the European Commission to adjust its Work Programme for 2020 announced earlier this year, yet despite this, the new strategy still intends to remains on track to address both the social and environmental problems of the textile industry both inside and outside Europe's own borders.

“We need long-term fundamental change which will look at the social and environmental aspects of the textile industry …. there will be mandatory legislation related to human rights and environmental due diligence,” noted Sinkevičius in an introduction to the online event.
