CALIFORNIA – An investigation by the US Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division has found one garment factory to be in breach of the Fair Labor Standards Act, having underpaid workers and failed to maintain payroll records.
The Sew Nice factory is reported to have paid staff the piece-rate – a frowned upon method whereby pay is determined by the number of items produced – while overtime was ignored.
Authorities have demanded the factory pays its staff’s back wages, while it’ll also face a fine of almost US$3,500 for the nature of the violations.
