DHAKA - The trade body representing garment factory owners in Bangladesh says that a new 'legally-binding agreement' on workplace safety will have no legal jurisdiction in the country.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) says that claims by brands and unions to have signed an extenstion to the Bangladesh Accord on Fire And Building Safety are "misleading".
BGMEA president Faruque Hassan pointed out that the Bangladesh Accord expired last year and that responsibility for workplace safety in Bangladesh now rests with a tripartite body, the Readymade Sustainability Council (RSC), controlled equally by factory owners, brands and unions.
