BRUSSELS - Workers' rights campaigners and trade unions are calling on the European Union (EU) to ensure that social auditing companies - which wrongly certify factories as safe - are held to account by new mandatory due diligence laws.

A total of 15 organisations have jointly signed a letter to the EU which points out that an Ali Enterprises factory in Karachi, Pakistan, was certified safe just weeks before a deadly fire claimed the lives of more than 250 garment workers nine years ago.

They are calling on European Commissioners, Euro MPs and EU member states to ensure social auditors are liable for their reports under new mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) legislation.
