PARIS - The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) is calling for tougher restrictions on the use of more than 1,000 chemicals in apparel.
ANSES believes the chemicals can cause allergic reactions in wearers, even when they are present in clothing or shoes at levels permitted by existing regulations.
The agency carried out a two year biomedical study to identify the chemicals that had caused skin allergies in 50 patients. Laboratories then confirmed the presence of these chemicals in the clothes and shoes the patients had worn.
