NEW YORK - Materials science company and apparel brand Pangaia has linked up with Japanese biotechnology startup Spiber to create the first commercially available sweatshirt made with the latter's 'Brewed Protein' fibres.

While fewer than 200 of the US$395 'NXT GEN' hoodies are available worldwide, they mark the beginning of a multi-year agreement between Pangaia and Spiber which could prove more significant for the scaling of Spiber's plant-based polymers.

Under the agreement, Pangaia Lab - the brand's discovery platform - will work with Spiber to integrate the Japanese company's cutting-edge structural protein technology into new products, starting with the limited-edition sweatshirt.
