WEST SACRAMENTO / AMSTERDAM - Carbon negative materials innovator Origin Materials has teamed up with Dutch renewable chemistry company Avantium to scale production of plant-based plastics for synthetic textiles and other uses.

The two companies aim to accelerate the mass production of FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) as the key building block for PEF (polyethylene furanoate) - a 100 per cent recyclable, bio-based polymer.

PEF, which has been referred to as the next generation polyester, is said to have superior performance qualities to petroleum-based PET (polyethylene terephthalate).
